Start with your plan type
Each of these paths funds ABA therapy differently. Find yours below, then send us your plan details and we will confirm the specifics in writing.
Health First Colorado (Medicaid)
Colorado Medicaid covers ABA therapy for eligible children with an autism diagnosis. Most of the families we serve fund care this way, and there is typically no copay.
Most common path
Commercial & employer plans
Colorado requires most state-regulated health plans to cover autism treatment, including ABA. Your deductible, copay, and any visit limits depend on your specific plan.
We check benefits for you
Medicare & dual-eligible households
Medicare is built for adults 65+ and people receiving SSDI, so ABA for a child is rarely funded through it directly. If a parent or caregiver is on Medicare, the child is usually covered through Medicaid, CHP+, or a family plan instead.

TRICARE & military families
ABA is funded through the TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration. We work with EFMP families and can walk you through referral and registration steps.

What insurance usually covers
Typically covered
- Initial assessment and functional behavior assessment
- One-on-one ABA sessions with an RBT
- BCBA treatment planning and supervision
- Family guidance and caregiver training sessions
- Progress reassessments and authorization renewals
Usually not covered
- Services delivered without a current autism diagnosis on file
- Hours beyond what the authorization approves
- Speech, occupational, or physical therapy — billed separately by those providers
- Academic tutoring or school-day instruction
- Missed sessions that fall outside your plan's policy
Every plan is written differently. Treat this as a starting point, not a benefits determination — our intake team confirms your actual coverage before services begin.
Is your child eligible?
If you can check most of these, there is a good chance your plan will fund ABA therapy at BehaviorSpan. If you cannot, we will help you get the missing pieces.
- Your child has an autism diagnosis from a licensed provider, or an evaluation is scheduled
- You have active Medicaid, TRICARE, or commercial health coverage
- Your child is between 18 months and 12 years old
- You can get to our Denver or Aurora center on weekdays
- A pediatrician or specialist can provide a referral if your plan requires one
How we verify your coverage
Four steps, and we handle three of them. Most families hear back within two business days.
1You send us your plan details
Insurance carrier, member ID and your child’s date of birth. Call us or email them to us (please don’t put them in the form).
2We run the benefits check
Our team contacts your plan directly and confirms covered services, authorization requirements, and any out-of-pocket cost.
3We review the numbers with you
A free consultation where you see exactly what care will cost before anything is scheduled.
4We file the paperwork and start
We write the treatment plan, submit for authorization, and begin therapy. No waitlist.
Plans we work with
We accept most major insurance providers in Colorado. Do not see yours? Send it to us anyway — the list changes and we can often still help.
Common questions
Still unsure after reading these? Call us at (720) 206-9644 and ask for intake.
Does Medicare pay for my child's ABA therapy?
Almost never directly. Medicare covers people 65 and older and people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance, so a child is rarely enrolled in it. If a grandparent or parent on Medicare is the child’s guardian, the child is usually covered by Health First Colorado, CHP+, or a family commercial plan instead — and any of those can fund ABA. Send us the household’s coverage details and we will sort out which policy applies.
What will I actually pay out of pocket?
Families on Health First Colorado usually pay nothing. On a commercial plan it depends on your deductible and copay, which we confirm in writing before your first session. You will never get a surprise bill from us for a service we did not tell you about first.
Do I need a diagnosis before I call?
No. Reach out even if you are only noticing early signs. Insurance does require an autism diagnosis to authorize ABA, so if your child does not have one yet we will point you toward evaluation options in the Denver metro area.
How long does authorization take?
A benefits check takes about two business days. Full authorization runs longer because it includes an assessment and a written treatment plan, and the timeline depends on your plan’s review process. We keep you updated at each step.
What if my plan denies coverage?
Denials are often paperwork problems, not final answers. We help you appeal, and we will look at whether your child qualifies for Health First Colorado or another funding route.
